Aspirin head hair jig

Fishing the YankUm Custom Tackle yellow aspirin head hair jig on Dale Hollow Lake

It is getting close to time to start fishing the late fall pattern on Dale Hollow. The water temp needs to get to 50 degrees and this pattern works all winter until the temps gets back above 50 degrees.

Setup:

7’10” YankUm Custom Tackle medium-light spinning rod

My preference for a reel is the Stradic 2500 reel

Spooled with 5# K9 crappie braid in high vis along with 8# K9 fluorocarbon leader

Start with 3/16 oz YankUm jig (That is the size I use most of the time. It has the right fall rate.)

Location:

I will usually start on the secondary points in a creek and work my way out to see how far they are back in the creek. As it stays colder I will spend more time on the main channels. Most of what I am fishing will be long running gravel points and the edges of flats. Dale Hollow has a lot of both. I start my approach starting out deep and working my way shallower. I start with a very long cast and watching my line as the jig falls because I must see what my jig is doing the whole way down. Many times you will see your line twitch and not feel the bite. That is the reason for the high vis braid. Once your line goes slack from the jig getting to bottom, I will give the jig a quick twitch or two and spin the reel to take the slack very quick so I can watch the line as it makes its fall. Your hit will always be on the fall. If you feel the hit or see the line twitch, you need to set the hook hard and quick.
